Lean Six Sigma Tool Series – How to use 5S<\/h2>\n

Have you ever used 5S?<\/h2>\n

If you ever organized your laptop, workspace, bedroom, closet, laundry, or garage, you utilized Lean Six Sigma 5S without realizing it.  5S is a well-known Lean organizational method used throughout all industries.  5S can be used in the workplace and within your everyday life. <\/p>\n

5S is an organzaitonal method that uses a list of five Japanese words: <\/span><\/p>\n

  • Seiri – Sort<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Seiton – Set in Order<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Seiso – Shine<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Seiketsu – Standarize<\/span><\/li>\n

    • 5S = Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain<\/li>\n
    • Originated and developed from Japan – Toyota Management System<\/li>\n
    • A structured approach to establishing and maintaining a well-organized workplace<\/li>\n
    • It can be used at home to organize kitchens, closets, garages, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      • Stops the causes of errors and defects<\/li>\n
      • Prevents Problems<\/li>\n
      • Provides a clean and organized work area<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        • Clean and tidy house (no clutter)<\/li>\n
        • No wasted energy on searching and retrieving things<\/li>\n
        • No money spent on extra storage<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          How to use 5S <\/h2>\n

          Step 1 – Sort<\/h4>\n

          Eliminate everything that is not necessary<\/h5>\n

          • Get rid of :\n

            • Unused appliances, tools, books, & medications<\/li>\n
            • Broken things<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
            • Separate files into necessary and unnecessary<\/li>\n
            • Create categories to put the required data and things into<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

              Step 2 – Straighten\/Set in order<\/h4>\n

              Find items easier<\/h5>\n

                  Step 3- Shine\/Sanitize<\/h4>\n
